The Darug and the name Dural
The Darug people were the original inhabitants of the area that is now Dural. The name Dural comes from Dooral-Dooral, an Aboriginal name that means a smoking hollow tree. In April 1817 Dooral appeared on a map drawn by Surveyor Richard Dundiate. At that time the name covered the whole area, including what are now Glenorie, Galston, Arcadia and Middle Dural.

Church, post office and the first grant
The land for a church was given by a local settler, James Roughley. A chapel of sandstone was built beside Old Northern Road around 1846. It had a vestry, an apse and a shingle roof, and a bell turret at the western gable. A porch followed soon after. The chapel is known as St Jude's Church, and it is included in the Register of the National Estate. The post office at Dural opened on 1 August 1864. George Hall received the first land grant in the area in 1879.
